Recruited from Casterton in western Victoria, Les Field was a lightly built wingman whose arrival at Essendon was preceded by service in World War II. He first caught the eye of club officials while playing for a Casterton District representative side against the visiting Bombers in 1946, eventually joining the club the following season. Field performed strongly in the reserves to earn his senior debut against Fitzroy in mid-1947, but he found it difficult to cement a regular position in a competitive lineup. After being dropped following just two senior appearances, he attempted to cross to Hawthorn in 1948 to find more opportunity, but the transfer ultimately fell through, marking the end of his brief VFL tenure.
