Recruited from the Wangaratta Rovers in the Ovens & Murray League, Les Gregory was a gifted and elusive utility who played a brief cameo for St Kilda in 1959. Originally a teenage prodigy with Milawa, he was enticed to the Junction Oval with a significant sign-on fee, debuting as a 20-year-old with exceptional ball-handling skills and a penetrating drop-kick. However, Gregory struggled to settle into city life and, after just three senior appearances—all of which were wins—he chose not to renew his playing permits. He returned to the country where he cemented his status as a regional football legend, starring in four premierships for Wangaratta Rovers and later spending a stint with Norwood in the SANFL.
