Bio
Recruited from Trafalgar in Gippsland, Les Hawken was a giant of a defender who added significant steel to John Kennedy’s backline in the early 1970s. Standing 192cm and weighing nearly 100kg, he was an imposing physical specimen for the era, renowned for his powerful build and a thumping long kick that could clear defensive lines with ease. Hawken secured his place in club history as a member of the 1971 Premiership side, though his Grand Final experience was brief; he started in the back pocket but was forced off with an ankle injury in the first quarter. After five seasons of service, the rugged backman departed the VFL at the end of 1974 to continue his career in Tasmania with the Cooee Football Club.
