Bio
Recruited from the Croydon Football Club in the Eastern Districts Football League, Les Heywood was a solidly built utility who earned his opportunity with South Melbourne during the mid-1960s. He arrived at the Lakeside Oval during a challenging era for the Swans, who were struggling for consistency near the foot of the VFL ladder under coach Noel McMahen. Standing 177cm and weighing a robust 86kg, Heywood possessed a sturdy frame well-suited to the physical contest, though he found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in the senior lineup. His VFL career was restricted to just five games during the 1964 season, a brief tenure that typified the high turnover of players at South Melbourne during the club's lean decades.
