Recruited from the local suburb of Elwood, Les Lewis was a lightweight rover and forward pocket who earned his opportunity at St Kilda during one of the club's most difficult eras. Standing 175cm and weighing just 67kg, he broke into the senior side midway through the winless 1948 season, a year that saw the Saints claim the wooden spoon. Lewis possessed the agility required for a small forward role and managed to boot three goals during his brief tenure, but he found it difficult to hold a regular place in a side that was constantly reshuffling its lineup in search of a winning formula. After struggling to add significantly to his game tally in 1949, he departed the VFL scene with 10 senior appearances.
