Bio
Recruited from Melbourne Grammar, Les Marks carved out a brief but promising career as a forward for University during the club's final season in the VFL. Joining the Students in 1914, he immediately became a key avenue to goal in a side that struggled mightily to score, booting 13 majors in his 14 appearances to offer rare support to star goalkicker Roy Park. His football journey was abruptly halted by the outbreak of World War I, where he served initially with the 6th Field Ambulance and later with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade. In a cruel twist of fate, Marks survived the dangers of the conflict only to be killed in a car accident in Bendigo in August 1919, just months after returning home to Australia.
