Bio
Recruited from Ararat in country Victoria, Les Meek arrived at the Junction Oval with a reputation as a dynamic forward after booting nine goals in a pre-season practice match, though he ultimately played the majority of his VFL football across half-back. He established himself as a regular defender for St Kilda during the early 1940s until his career was interrupted by World War II, forcing him to miss the entire 1944 and 1945 seasons while serving in the Army. His return to top-level football in 1946 was marred by controversy when he received a heavy eight-week suspension for kicking Melbourne veteran Jack Mueller, effectively derailing his comeback. Meek played just one game in 1947 before requesting a clearance to the Riverina district, where he forged a successful post-VFL legacy as the captain-coach of Ganmain, leading the club to back-to-back premierships in the South West Football League.
