Stats
Bio
A World War I veteran who served with the 10th Artillery Brigade, Les Punch arrived at Footscray as a mature-age recruit from Preston, where he was regarded as the premier centreman in the junior association. His brief tenure at the club coincided with its most pivotal era; he was a member of the 1924 VFA premiership team and famously booted three goals in the "Championship of Victoria" victory over VFL premiers Essendon, a win that solidified Footscray's case for promotion. Punch transitioned with the club into the big league the following season, earning a spot in the inaugural VFL side that faced Fitzroy in Round 1, 1925. A diminutive but clever and persistent rover standing just 165cm, he played 11 senior games in the top flight before returning to local football, remembered primarily as a catalyst for the club's successful elevation to the VFL.
