Bio
A gifted all-round sportsman recruited from Melbourne Grammar, Les Rainey initially found it difficult to break into a powerful Essendon lineup during the club's early golden era. After managing only sporadic appearances at East Melbourne, he crossed to Melbourne in 1902 and immediately flourished with regular senior opportunities. Rainey proved to be a dangerous option in attack, booting 17 goals in his debut season for the Redlegs and featuring in a semi-final clash against his former side. Although his league football career was brief, his elite athleticism was undeniable, and he later established a significant sporting legacy as a first-class cricketer for Victoria and a competitor in the Australasian Tennis Championships.
