Stats
Bio
Recruited from Swan Hill in Victoria's Mallee region, Les Russell was a defensive utility who managed seven senior games for Fitzroy across two separate stints. He arrived at the Brunswick Street Oval in 1959, joining a competitive Lions outfit that was consistently knocking on the door of the finals, a depth of talent that made regular selection difficult for the 180cm recruit. After playing four games in his debut season, Russell fought his way back into the senior lineup for three more appearances in 1961, donning both the number 26 and number 34 guernseys during his time at the club. While he did not register a goal at VFL level, his perseverance to earn a recall highlighted his dedication, and he remained a respected figure within the Fitzroy past players network until his passing in 2023.
