Recruited from Korumburra, Les Thompson arrived at Victoria Park carrying a letter of introduction from four-time premiership player Bob Makeham, who had spotted the teenager's potential in country football. He served a significant apprenticeship in the seconds, eventually winning the reserves best and fairest in 1948 before earning his senior debut the following season. A pacey utility who rotated between a half-back flank and half-forward, Thompson was known for his speed and accurate distribution, though his slight frame often made the physical contest difficult. Despite a promising start, his senior opportunities were limited by persistent injuries and the demands of his professional career outside of football. He was cleared to Hawthorn midway through the 1950 season but failed to add to his game tally, eventually returning to lower-level competition in his thirties.
