Recruited from Rochester in country Victoria, Les Watt was a multi-sport athlete whose exploits as a professional sprinter rivalled his reputation on the football field. He initially broke into the Collingwood side in 1932 but struggled to cement a spot in the powerful Magpies lineup, managing just two senior appearances before transferring to Fitzroy the following season. Settling at Brunswick Street as a follower and defender, Watt utilised his blistering pace to distinguish himself from standard key position players, famously winning the Eltham Gift and finishing fourth in the prestigious Stawell Gift in 1936 during his VFL career. He played 35 games for the Maroons over five seasons before his life was tragically cut short when he passed away at the age of 36.
