Stats
Bio
Recruited from Hawthorn Rovers, Les White was a versatile utility who made his name as a reliable defender for Essendon during their golden era in the early 1910s. While predominantly stationed on a half-back flank, where his reading of the play and defensive accountability shone, he was equally capable of running through the centre when required. His career at the Bombers was defined by a mix of heartbreak and triumph; after injury cruelly ruled him out of the club’s 1911 premiership side, he rebounded to play a key role in the 1912 Grand Final victory over South Melbourne, securing his place in history as a premiership player. After leaving Essendon at the end of the 1915 season, White spent five years out of the VFL before making a brief, two-game cameo for St Kilda in 1920 to close out his time at the top level. He passed away prematurely from pneumonia in 1927, aged just 36.
