Bio
Recruited from Box Hill City, Lew Gough was a versatile utility who bookended his VFL career with stints at Hawthorn. He made an immediate impact upon his debut in 1925, proving a dangerous avenue to goal by booting 17 majors in just eight games. After spending the next four seasons in the VFA with Camberwell, Gough returned to the league with Melbourne in 1930, where he was reinvented as a key defender; his string of matches in 1931 famously came as a replacement for regular fullback Bill Tymms, who had taken leave for his honeymoon. He returned to Hawthorn in 1932 but was hampered by injury, adding just four games to his tally before being cleared to Prahran as captain-coach. Tragically, Gough fell ill during his time in the VFA and passed away the following year at the age of 31.
