Bio
Drafted by Hawthorn with pick 34 in the 2008 National Draft, Liam Shiels established himself as the quintessential role player during the club's golden era. While often overshadowed by high-profile midfield teammates like Sam Mitchell and Luke Hodge, Shiels was a critical component of the Hawks' three consecutive premierships between 2013 and 2015, valued highly internally for his elite tackling pressure, defensive accountability, and relentless two-way running. Originally utilised as a run-with player tasked with shutting down opposition stars, he developed into a consistent ball-winner and a key leadership figure, eventually serving as vice-captain at Waverley Park.
After 255 games in brown and gold, Shiels appeared to have played his final game when he announced his retirement at the end of the 2022 season amid Hawthorn's aggressive list regeneration. However, former coach Alastair Clarkson lured him out of retirement to join North Melbourne via the pre-season supplemental selection period, seeing value in his experience for a rebuilding squad. Shiels provided a steady hand and mentorship for the Kangaroos' youthful midfield across two seasons at Arden Street before hanging up the boots permanently at the conclusion of 2024, finishing his career as a highly respected three-time premiership player.
