Recruited from the Hamilton Imperials in Victoria's Western District, Cooke was an imposing physical presence who arrived at the Junction Oval offering significant size for the era. Standing 191cm and weighing over 90kg, he was a ruckman and key position prospect capable of using his frame to advantage in aerial contests. He broke into the senior lineup for the opening month of the 1957 season, debuting in a promising win over South Melbourne, but found it difficult to cement a permanent spot as the Saints struggled for consistency. After spending a year out of the senior side, he earned a solitary recall for a victory against Carlton early in the 1958 season before concluding his brief VFL tenure.
