Arriving at South Melbourne amid a recruiting bidding war, Lindsay McNamara was a highly rated prospect from Northcote in the VFA. He was a versatile utility capable of playing in the centre or as a marking forward, showing immediate promise with his ability to find the goals early in his VFL tenure. His momentum was halted by a severe knee injury in his debut season, and although he returned to boot three goals in the opening round of 1940, he was unable to hold his spot at the Lakeside Oval. McNamara crossed to Fitzroy midway through that season but struggled to break into the senior side consistently, eventually finishing his top-level career with a brief wartime stint for the Sturt-South combined team in Adelaide.
