Bio
Recruited from local side North Geelong, Lionel Barclay was a lightly framed utility who helped re-establish the Cats during the challenging wartime era. Joining the senior list in 1944 as Geelong returned to the VFL competition after a two-year hiatus due to wartime travel restrictions, the 175cm recruit was thrown straight into the action, debuting in the club's return match against Collingwood. Weighing in at just 66kg, Barclay relied on agility rather than physical dominance, rotating through the forward flank to boot seven goals across his 12 career games. He remained with the club for the 1945 season before departing the VFL scene, remembered as one of the local footballers who stepped up to ensure the Hoops remained competitive while many regular senior players were away on military service.
