Bio
Lionel Hastie was a unique recruit for Fitzroy, hailing from the Newtown Football Club in Sydney rather than the traditional Victorian pathways, despite his Tasmanian birth. Joining the Maroons in 1931—the same year the club unveiled superstar Haydn Bunton Sr—Hastie quickly established himself as a serviceable forward option. Standing 180cm, he played as a medium-sized attacker who knew where the goals were, booting 15 majors in his 13 appearances to average better than a goal a game. Although he showed the potential to become a regular fixture in the senior side, his VFL career was ultimately confined to that single season during the turbulent Depression era before he departed the league.
