Bio
Born Reginald George Whitton Bennett in Devonport, Tasmania, "Lloyd" was a mature-age recruit who joined Melbourne during the player shortage of the Second World War. A solid 182cm utility from Longford, where he had previously won a Tasman Shields Trophy, Bennett was already 28 years old when he received his call-up to the VFL in 1944. He made a memorable entry to the senior side by debuting in legendary captain-coach Percy Beames' 200th game, holding his own to play nine matches that season. While he managed to drift forward and snag four goals during his brief tenure, his career followed the trajectory of many wartime footballers, playing a single season as a vital fill-in before the return of regular servicemen saw him fade from the league level.
