Arriving at Windy Hill via the St Kilda reserves and Maribyrnong Presbyterians, Lloyd Bertram was a solidly built recruit who made an immediate but fleeting impact on the Essendon forward line. Standing 175cm with a stocky 83kg frame, he used his strength to great effect early in his career, booting 10 goals in the first five rounds of the 1928 season. Despite this promising start, he fell out of senior favour and spent the entire 1929 season out of the side. Bertram returned for three final appearances in early 1930 but failed to add to his goal tally, eventually crossing to the VFA where he reinvented himself as a full-back for Coburg between 1930 and 1934.
