Recruited from the Goulburn Valley, Lloyd Burgmann found his way to the VFL through an opportunistic holiday visit to Melbourne. Acting on the advice of his father Jack, who had played briefly for Richmond in the 1930s, Burgmann trained with the Demons in 1969 and impressed enough to secure a list spot. A talented junior who had previously captained the Victorian Schoolboys, he developed into a dangerous goal-kicking wingman and half-forward, booting 41 goals in just 30 senior games—a prolific strike rate for a mid-sized player of that era. After tasting success as a member of the club's 1970 Reserves premiership side, he played three seasons of senior football before returning to the country in 1973 to join Mooroopna. He later enjoyed a long coaching career in regional Victoria, and the family connection remained strong when his son, Shane, was drafted to the Demons under the father-son rule in the 1990s.
