Bio
Recruited from Ivanhoe Amateurs, Lloyd Williams arrived at Victoria Park with a glowing reputation, having starred in the 1956 Olympic demonstration match for the VAFA. A tough, tenacious half-back flanker who had previously abandoned a pre-season at Fitzroy, Williams immediately impressed the Magpies’ selectors with his rugged approach and strong hands. He made his senior debut in a Grand Final replay against Melbourne in Round 2, 1957, and held his spot for the following week, looking every bit a long-term prospect. However, his VFL journey was cruelly cut short in just his second game when he suffered a severe leg injury that ultimately forced him into premature retirement. Williams later returned to local football as a successful coach for Ivanhoe and Heidelberg, leaving Collingwood fans to wonder what might have been for the promising defender.
