Recruited from the coastal town of Port Fairy, Lou Evans was a defensive-minded player who joined St Kilda during a particularly lean period for the club in the early 1930s. After refining his craft with Kew, he broke into the VFL senior side late in the 1933 season, slotting into a lineup that was frequently on the back foot. Evans found himself stationed in a defence constantly under siege, as the Saints struggled near the bottom of the ladder, eventually claiming the wooden spoon during his second and final year. Primarily utilised as a backman who focused on stopping his opponent rather than generating attacking drive, he played 12 games over two seasons without troubling the scorers. His VFL career was brief, ending after a ten-game run in 1934, leaving him as one of the many battlers who tried to shore up the St Kilda backline during a decade of on-field struggle.
