Bio
Recruited from the South Melbourne Colts, Lou Mangan was a lightly framed utility whose VFL tenure was significantly interrupted by the Second World War. Breaking into the senior lineup in 1942, the 173cm local product had his time at Lake Oval curtailed by service with the RAAF, which took him away from Victoria during his prime developmental years. While stationed in South Australia, Mangan featured for Port Adelaide in the SANFL, maintaining his match fitness before returning to South Melbourne for a final campaign in 1944. Though his top-level tally remained modest, he is remembered as one of the wartime era's notable dual-state players, eventually trading his boots for a boardroom suit to become the Managing Director of Carlton & United Breweries.
