Recruited from North Adelaide via Mount Gambier, Lucas Herbert was a powerfully built ruckman who holds a unique place in Crows history as the club's 100th player. Selected with pick 48 in the 1998 National Draft, he was immediately thrown into the fray, making his debut in Round 1 of the 1999 season where he joined the select group of players to kick a goal with their first kick in league football. Herbert played 14 games that year, serving as the primary backup to premiership ruckman David Pittman, but despite carrying a significant workload for a first-year player, he was surprisingly delisted after just one season. He returned to the SANFL to play for North Adelaide and Glenelg before forging a distinguished career with the South Australia Police, where he later earned public acclaim in 2012 for his bravery in rescuing an elderly woman from a burning property.
