Bio
Originally rookie-listed by Hawthorn, Lukas Markovic endured a frustrating start to his career when a broken ankle derailed his initial stint without a senior game. Forced to rebuild his credentials in the VFL, he captained Box Hill to impressive form, prompting the Western Bulldogs to hand him a lifeline as a mature-age recruit in the 2009 National Draft. Markovic quickly established himself as a "no-frills" key defender at the Whitten Oval, using his strong frame to spoil and wrestle with the competition's powerhouse forwards during a transitional era for the club. His reliability was rewarded with a top-ten finish in the 2011 Best and Fairest, though he surprisingly played as a marking target in his final season, booting all five of his career goals in just four games during 2013. A highly respected clubman who won the Bulldogs' Community Award, he continued to lead by example after his AFL delisting, serving as the inaugural captain of the Footscray VFL team.
