Bio
Recruited from Woodville-West Torrens with pick 18 in the 2013 National Draft, South Australian Luke Dunstan made an immediate impression at St Kilda, earning a Rising Star nomination in his debut match. A rugged, left-footed inside midfielder, Dunstan built his game around contested ball-winning and clearance work, often doing the heavy lifting at stoppages. While he became a regular fixture in the Saints' engine room for much of his tenure, questions regarding his spread from contests and disposal efficiency occasionally saw him drift in and out of the senior lineup.
Despite a prolific patch of form in 2021 where he polled 11 Brownlow votes in just 12 games, Dunstan was delisted by St Kilda as the club looked to reshape its midfield demographic. He was subsequently thrown a lifeline by Melbourne as a delisted free agent to provide depth for their premiership-winning on-ball brigade. While he found senior opportunities limited behind the likes of Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca, Dunstan dominated at state league level, winning the 2022 J.J. Liston Trophy as the VFL's best and fairest player. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2023 season after suffering a ruptured ACL while playing for the Casey Demons.
