Teams

Recruited from Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Luke McGuane arrived at Richmond with a famous football surname, being the cousin of Collingwood premiership star Mick McGuane. Selected with pick 36 in the 2004 National Draft, he spent the bulk of his time at Punt Road as a tall defender, often tasked with curbing opposition key forwards. However, his career found a second wind in 2012 when he was swung into the forward line. The positional switch rejuvenated his output, allowing him to use his strong marking hands to become a serviceable goal-kicker and provide structure for the Tigers' attack during their push toward finals contention.

After being delisted by Richmond at the end of 2013, McGuane exercised his rights as a delisted free agent to return to his home state of Queensland, signing with the Brisbane Lions. The move reunited him with former Tigers assistant coach Justin Leppitsch, but his time at the Gabba was severely hampered by persistent knee issues. Despite showing promise in the few matches he managed to play—including a three-goal haul against Gold Coast—he was unable to get a clear run at senior football. He was forced to retire in late 2015 due to recurring injuries, finishing his career as a respected utility who had successfully adapted his game to survive at the top level.
