Bio
Originally selected by Hawthorn with pick 10 in the 1999 National Draft, Luke McPharlin spent two seasons at Glenferrie Oval before requesting a trade back to his native Western Australia. The resulting deal was a watershed moment in trade history, seeing McPharlin and Trent Croad sent to Fremantle in exchange for the number one draft pick that secured Luke Hodge. While initially utilised as a versatile swingman capable of providing a tall target in attack—highlighted by his Mark of the Year victory in 2005—he eventually settled permanently in defence, where his combination of closing speed, spoiling ability, and aerial prowess made him one of the league's premier key backs.
McPharlin became the cornerstone of the Dockers' backline for over a decade, regularly tasked with quelling the opposition's most dangerous key forward. His standing in the game was officially recognised with All-Australian selection in 2012, and he served as a critical pillar in Fremantle's defensive unit during their rise to the 2013 Grand Final. Despite battling persistent calf and soft-tissue injuries in his final seasons, which often interrupted his continuity, he retired in 2015 as one of the club's most important players and a central figure in their most successful era.
