Bio
Recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers, Luke Penny was selected by the Western Bulldogs with pick 14 in the 1998 National Draft as a highly rated key position prospect. A disciplined tall defender known for his spoiling ability and shut-down roles, he showed glimpses of his potential at Whitten Oval but struggled to cement a permanent spot in a backline anchored by veteran Matthew Croft. Seeking greater opportunity, Penny was traded to St Kilda at the end of 2002 in exchange for a second-round draft pick, where he was immediately tasked with bolstering a developing defence under Grant Thomas. He became a regular fixture for the Saints, notably holding down a key defensive post during the club's 2004 preliminary final campaign, but his career was ultimately cut short by injury. Battling chronic knee and hamstring issues that severely hampered his durability, Penny was forced to retire at just 25 years of age following the 2005 season.
