Bio
Recruited from the Burnie Dockers in Tasmania, Luke Russell joined the Gold Coast Suns as one of the club's priority 17-year-old access selections prior to their entry into the AFL. A smooth-moving utility with a penetrating left-foot kick, he was utilised primarily on the wing and half-back flank, where his ability to break lines and score long-range goals proved valuable during the Suns' foundation years. Russell enjoyed his most consistent campaign in 2013, playing 18 games and finishing sixth in the club champion award, but he found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in subsequent seasons as injuries and form fluctuations limited his output. After struggling for opportunities under coach Rodney Eade, Russell was delisted at the conclusion of the 2016 season, departing as one of the expansion side's inaugural squad members.
