Bio
Selected by West Coast with pick 18 in the 2008 National Draft, Luke Shuey overcame a delayed start to his career, hampered by injury and personal tragedy, to become one of the most influential midfielders in the club's history. He established himself as an explosive clearance specialist, renowned for his ability to burst away from stoppages and deliver the ball inside 50 with precision. Shuey built a reputation as a clutch performer in high-stakes matches, famously kicking a goal after the siren to win the 2017 Elimination Final against Port Adelaide and claiming the Norm Smith Medal in the Eagles' 2018 premiership victory.
A two-time John Worsfold Medallist, Shuey assumed the captaincy from Shannon Hurn in 2020. However, his tenure as skipper was heavily impacted by persistent soft tissue injuries, particularly hamstring strains, which restricted his continuity and availability during the club's difficult rebuilding phase. Despite these physical battles late in his career, he remained a vital leader and mentor to the developing playing group until his retirement at the conclusion of the 2023 season, departing as a club great defined by his calmness under pressure.
