Bio
Recruited from the Kingborough Tigers in Tasmania, Mackenzie Willis was secured by the Gold Coast Suns in the 2015 National Draft to add composure and run to their defensive rotations. A balanced player capable of operating as a rebounding defender or through the midfield, he was characterised by his professional work ethic and neat left-foot distribution, though he found it difficult to command a permanent spot in the senior side during a turbulent period for the club. His progress was cruelly halted in 2018 when he suffered a ruptured ACL during a NEAFL match, an injury that occurred just as he was pressing for selection and ultimately precipitated his delisting at the end of that season. While his AFL tenure was brief and injury-affected, Willis remained in Queensland and successfully transitioned into a highly respected captain and consistent performer for Southport in the state leagues.
