Bio
Recruited from Blackburn, Malcolm "Mal" Kennedy was a versatile talent who balanced his football with elite schooling at Camberwell Grammar and the University of Melbourne. He began his brief VFL tenure as a half-forward, booting a goal on debut against Collingwood in 1911, before transitioning into a defensive role the following season. Kennedy holds a unique minor distinction in Demons history as the first player to wear the number 12 guernsey when jumper numbers were officially introduced for the 1912 season. However, his football career was voluntarily cut short mid-year when he prioritised his military ambitions, leaving the club to attend the Royal Military College at Duntroon. This path led him directly to the First World War, where he served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front before being killed in action in Belgium in 1918.
