Teams

A local recruit from the Ascot Vale district, Mal MacRae broke into the Essendon senior lineup midway through the 1930 season. He operated primarily as a forward who could rotate through the flanks, demonstrating a reliable eye for the goals by booting 14 majors across his 19 appearances for the Bombers. After two seasons at Windy Hill, MacRae crossed to Fitzroy in 1932, likely seeking greater consistency in senior selection. He managed a further six games for the Maroons, maintaining a solid scoring rate of a goal per game, before his VFL career concluded at the end of that year. His life was tragically cut short when he passed away in 1947 at the age of just 39.
