Bio
Born in Papua New Guinea and raised in Queensland, Mal Michael began his AFL journey on Collingwood's rookie list, quickly earning a reputation as a physically imposing fullback. Despite showing promise at Victoria Park, his career truly defined itself after a trade to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2001 season. Returning to his home state, Michael became the anchor of a legendary defensive unit that underpinned the Lions' historic premiership three-peat. As a classic lockdown defender, he was renowned for his immense upper-body strength and ability to nullify the competition's most dangerous power forwards, often freeing up teammates like Justin Leppitsch to intercept.
His exit from Brisbane remains one of the more unusual transfer sagas of the era; after announcing his retirement at the end of 2006, he famously reversed his decision months later to join Essendon via the Pre-Season Draft. This move, while contentious in Brisbane, provided the Bombers with a seasoned body to support Dustin Fletcher in a developing backline. Michael played two final seasons at Windy Hill before retiring permanently in 2008, leaving the game as a triple premiership player and a significant figure in the growth of Australian rules football in both Queensland and Papua New Guinea.
