Bio
Recruited from the Chelsea Football Club after a dominant 1972 season where he won the Best and Fairest, Mal Owens arrived at Melbourne amidst a recruiting zone controversy that saw his transfer fee slashed due to boundary realignments. Standing 188cm with impressive mobility, Owens was an athletic key position utility capable of lining up at both centre half-forward and centre half-back, or providing relief in the ruck. He made his debut in Round 1, 1973, but struggled to command a permanent spot in the senior side, managing just 16 appearances over three seasons at the top level. Following his stint with the Demons, he transferred to Sandringham in the VFA before returning to Chelsea as captain-coach in 1977.
