Bio
Arriving at Carlton as the highly touted number one pick in the 2005 National Draft, Marc Murphy famously eschewed a father-son nomination to the Brisbane Lions to carve his own path in Melbourne. The son of Fitzroy and South Melbourne legend John Murphy, he made an immediate impression at Princes Park, winning the AFLPA Best First Year Player award and quickly establishing himself as a central figure in the Blues' engine room. A classy, prolific ball-winner with elite decision-making skills and a dangerous goal sense, Murphy peaked individually in 2011, earning All-Australian honours, the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award, and the first of two John Nicholls Medals.
Murphy shouldered a significant burden as club captain from 2013 to 2018, leading the side during one of the most turbulent and lean periods in Carlton's history. Despite the team's on-field struggles and external speculation regarding his future during free agency windows, he remained a loyal servant to the club, often playing through injury and immense scrutiny. As he transitioned into the twilight of his career, he selflessly moved out of the midfield to roles across half-forward and half-back, allowing the next generation of on-ballers to develop while he provided veteran guidance.
