Selected by Fremantle with pick 10 in the 2005 National Draft, Marcus Drum arrived in the AFL with high expectations and strong pedigree as the nephew of former Dockers coach Damian Drum. A versatile key position prospect capable of playing at either end of the ground, he was primarily utilised as a defender who could intercept and rebound. Despite his potential, Drum's time in Western Australia was severely hampered by a lack of continuity, managing just 22 games over four seasons as he battled persistent fitness issues. Seeking a fresh start and a return to Victoria, he was traded to Geelong ahead of the 2010 season, but his run of bad luck continued at Kardinia Park. Plagued by a series of unusual and recurring injuries—including a detached retina and chronic pelvic problems—he never managed a senior appearance for the Cats and was forced into premature retirement in July 2011 at just 24 years of age.
