Family

Arriving at Melbourne with the weight of a famous surname, Mark Alves was the younger brother of Demons captain and future North Melbourne premiership star Stan Alves. A precocious talent recruited from Edithvale-Aspendale, he first trialed with the club as a 15-year-old after winning a league best and fairest in the juniors, but had to wait four seasons to earn his senior opportunity. Ironically, his brief stint in the ones came in 1977, the year after his brother had departed the club. Alves played four consecutive matches late in the season, debuting at the MCG against Richmond, but could not secure a long-term position on the list. Following his departure from the VFL, he moved west to play for Subiaco in the WAFL before returning to Victorian local football with Mordialloc.
