Bio
Recruited to Essendon as a teenager, Mark Athorn was unable to break into the Bombers' formidable mid-1980s senior lineup, eventually moving to Footscray where he made his VFL debut in 1987. A disciplined run-with player and defensive specialist, Athorn became a quintessential journeyman of the competition, following his three seasons at the Western Oval with consecutive single-year stints at Fitzroy and the Sydney Swans. He eventually found stability at Carlton in 1992, where his endurance and tagging capability saw him hold down a regular spot in the senior side. Athorn's career culminated with an appearance in the 1993 Grand Final against his original club, Essendon, leaving the game as one of the rare players to be listed by five separate VFL/AFL clubs.
