Recruited from East Ringwood, Mark Attard was a small rover and forward who navigated the shifting landscape of junior development in the early 1990s. After spending the 1991 season with Essendon—likely in the dying days of the VFL/AFL Under-19s competition—he failed to secure a senior debut and moved to the newly formed TAC Cup with the Eastern Ranges. His form there caught the eye of North Melbourne recruiters, who handed him a lifeline with pick 19 in the 1992 Mid-Season Draft. Standing just 176cm, Attard was a crumbing option who made his senior debut late in the 1992 season, playing the final three rounds and booting two goals, including an appearance against his former club Essendon at the MCG. Despite showing glimpses of potential during this late-season cameo, he could not break into the Kangaroos' senior side throughout 1993 and was delisted without adding to his game tally.
