Bio
Recruited from Glenelg with pick 35 in the 2006 National Draft, Mark Austin was a key defender who entered the league alongside his close friend and SANFL teammate Bryce Gibbs. His five-year tenure at Carlton was defined by frustration, as persistent injuries and strong competition for defensive spots restricted him to just 15 senior games. After being delisted by the Blues at the end of 2011, Austin was thrown a lifeline by the Western Bulldogs in the Rookie Draft, where he eventually played his most consistent football. Standing 195cm, he operated primarily as a dour, lockdown backman tasked with spoiling opposition talls, though he occasionally swung forward when required. He added 29 games to his tally over three seasons at the Whitten Oval but remained on the fringe of the best 22, eventually being delisted for the final time at the conclusion of the 2014 season.
