Mark Baguley’s career stands as a testament to the value of persistence and the mature-age rookie pathway. Plucked from the Frankston Dolphins in the VFL while working as a plumber, "Baggers" arrived at Essendon with a blue-collar work ethic that quickly endeared him to the Bomber faithful. He initially carved out a niche as a fierce, uncompromising small defender, often tasked with shutting down the opposition's most dangerous goal-sneaks. His hardness at the contest and willingness to put his body on the line saw him highly respected within the club, eventually serving as vice-captain during the challenging 2016 season.

Later in his career, Baguley reinvented himself as a defensive forward to extend his time at the top level, bringing the same intense pressure to the attacking 50. While he was never a prolific goal kicker, his ability to lock the ball inside the forward line and lay punishing tackles created countless opportunities for his teammates. Retiring as a one-club player with over 130 games to his name, he left a legacy as a selfless, team-first warrior who extracted every ounce of ability from his frame, proving that it is never too late to make an impact at the highest level.
