Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle as a polished mature-age prospect, Mark "Toby" Bairstow arrived at Geelong with a Sandover Medal already around his neck and immediately established himself as a prolific ball-magnet. A tireless rover with elite accumulation skills and a sharp eye for goal, he formed a lethal midfield combination with Paul Couch and Garry Hocking, fueling the high-scoring "run and gun" style that defined the Cats' era. His impact was instant, earning All-Australian selection in his debut season and becoming a key architect of the club's rise up the ladder.
Bairstow's career followed a unique trajectory; after playing in the legendary 1989 Grand Final loss, he famously walked away from the VFL to return to his family's farm in Lake Grace, missing the entire 1990 season. He was lured back to Kardinia Park in 1991 and returned better than ever, claiming two more All-Australian blazers and serving as club captain from 1992 to 1994. Despite leading Geelong to two further Grand Final appearances, a premiership proved elusive, and his tenure ended abruptly when he was delisted by incoming coach Gary Ayres following the 1994 season.
