Bio
Recruited from North Hobart with the fourth selection in the 1997 National Draft, Mark Bolton entered the AFL system with high expectations but faced the daunting task of breaking into a formidable Essendon lineup. Although he debuted in 1998, he spent his initial seasons on the fringe of selection, notably missing out on the Bombers' dominant 2000 premiership side before earning a spot in the 2001 Grand Final team. A prototype utility player, Bolton was often deployed to fill gaps across the ground, ranging from key defence to the wing, though he eventually found a specific niche as a tall run-with player. His endurance and reach allowed him to negate athletic opponents who were too mobile for traditional key defenders, and while he sometimes battled for consistency, he remained a serviceable fixture in the senior side until his retirement at the end of 2007.
