Recruited from Doncaster, Mark Eaves was a tall key position prospect who graduated from the Fitzroy under-19s to make a brief impact at senior level. Standing 192cm, he was utilized primarily as a defender during his time at the Lions, managing just two sporadic appearances across two seasons—a debut loss to Richmond in 1982 and a solitary game in a massive win over Melbourne in 1983. Unable to secure a permanent spot in the Fitzroy lineup, Eaves found his true calling after crossing to the VFA via a short stint with North Adelaide. Rebranding himself as a powerful forward for Sandringham, he became a club legend with a match-winning five-goal haul in the 1985 VFA Grand Final, a performance that saw him awarded the Norm Goss Medal as best on ground. This blistering form earned him a second VFL list spot with Footscray in 1986, where he dominated at reserves level but added no further senior games to his tally.
