Bio
Mark Hutchings took the long road to regular AFL football, exemplifying resilience and persistence throughout his career. Originally rookie-listed by St Kilda in 2010, he was delisted after just one season without making a senior appearance. Returning to the WAFL, he flourished at West Perth, starring in a premiership side and finishing runner-up in the Sandover Medal, which prompted West Coast to offer him a lifeline with pick 60 in the 2012 National Draft. While he possessed the natural accumulation skills of a standard midfielder, Hutchings carved out a vital niche as a disciplined run-with player, often sacrificing his own game to nullify the opposition's most dangerous ball-users.
His defining moment came on the biggest stage during the 2018 Grand Final, where his tight checking on Collingwood star Steele Sidebottom was instrumental in West Coast's premiership victory. A team-first operator who was highly valued inside the four walls, Hutchings battled soft tissue injuries late in his tenure before being delisted at the conclusion of the 2021 season. He departed the Eagles as a respected clubman who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his second chance at the elite level.
