Bio
Recruited from North Adelaide via the 2002 Rookie Draft, Mark Jamar evolved from a raw prospect into Melbourne's premier ruckman during a turbulent era for the club. Affectionately known as "The Russian," he was a traditional ruckman who relied on physical strength, precise tap work, and contested marking rather than athleticism or mobility. While his early career was often hampered by injury and inconsistent form, Jamar peaked brilliantly in 2010, establishing himself as one of the league's dominant big men to earn All-Australian selection and finish third in the Demons' Best and Fairest count.
Jamar remained a key figure at Melbourne for over a decade, often shouldering a heavy workload in a struggling side, but found opportunities limited in his final seasons as the club looked to regenerate its list with Max Gawn emerging as the successor. He was delisted at the end of 2015 but was handed a lifeline by Essendon the following year, signed as a top-up player to provide depth during the Bombers' supplements saga suspensions. He played a handful of games in red and black before retiring, remembered primarily as a loyal servant who provided a hardened physical presence during some of Melbourne's leanest years.
